Mr. Newman specializes in providing strategic intellectual property counseling services that help clients obtain a competitive edge and achieve their business goals. He has over 10 years of experience working with clients of all types (such as large corporate entities, start-ups, emerging and established businesses as well as investors) to develop, acquire and enforce worldwide patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret rights, negotiating collaborations and transactions involving intellectual property, preparing patentability, invalidity, clearance and non-infringement opinions, evaluating patent portfolios, providing design-alternative advisement, and performing due diligence for mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Newman draws on his considerable experience to provide the guidance and protection plans that will best address the client's particular situation and needs.
Mr. Newman has prepared and prosecuted numerous patent applications disclosing a broad array of technical innovations in areas such as games and gaming devices, business methods, e-commerce, financial services, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, mechanical and electromechanical devices, filtration systems, microporous membranes, chemical processing, polymer manufacture, power generation, environmental "green" technology and fuel cells.
Prior to joining Howard & Howard, Mr. Newman was in-house counsel for a major gaming product supplier in Las Vegas where he was involved in handling worldwide intellectual property matters. Mr. Newman also optimized and administered an invention submission program, worked with product developers, engineers and business managers to develop a strategic portfolio of worldwide patents, trained and supervised a patent agent team, conducted intellectual property due diligence, advised company executives on potential mergers and acquisitions, and obtained worldwide trademark protection for the company's marks.
Prior to his role as in-house counsel, Mr. Newman was in private practice at a large regional firm in the New York City area where he prepared and prosecuted patent applications of varying technology, managed and prosecuted a patent portfolio consisting of over 500 U.S. and foreign patents and patent applications for a large pharmaceutical company, and worked with the paper product and packaging division of a Fortune 500 company to develop their patenting strategy and portfolio, among other things.
Mr. Newman received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1994 and his J.D. from Pace University School of Law in 1999. He is a member of the State Bars of Nevada, New York and Connecticut. He is also admitted to the United States District Courts for Connecticut and Nevada. Mr. Newman is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
